Sculler's Head 2019

Scullers Head is a right of passage for any rower looking to compete in a single. It is a 4.25mile (circa 7km) race from Mortlake to Putney, representing the exact course of the famous "Boat Race", but in the reverse direction. Scullers get to pit themselves against a scullers from all over Britain and the world to see where they stand half way through the Head Season. This year saw a first time for all three of the City of Sheffield Scullers to take on the Tideway course. Earlier in the season all three also competed in the Nottingham Scullers head in preparation for London.

Rachel Baker produced the most successful CSRC result at scullers head. Rachel showed great form in the Junior Singles at Women's Henley this summer, making the semi-finals after only taking up rowing a year before.

At Nottingham, Rachel finished second (65/120 overall) in the J18 category at to the current Junior World Champion. At London, Rachel came third in her category out of a field of twenty (182/454 overall).

After a very successful 2018 and 2019 seasons in the double, Cat Webb decided to switch to the single during head season and became the first woman to row down the scullers head track since as long as anyone at the club can remember.

At Nottingham, Cat finished fourth in her Women's Open category (105/120 overall). At London, Cat finished tenth in her category out of thirteen (368/454 overall).

After losing out in the Wyfold at Henley Royal Regatta in the Summer Simon Coyne switched to sculling. At Nottingham, Simon finished second in his Open category by only 0.5 seconds (32/120 overall)!

At London, Simon was unsuccessful in his bid of retaining the Men's Club title for City of Sheffield finishing eleventh in his category out of twenty three (125/454 overall).

Afterwards, the scullers reflected on the head season with positive reflection and anticipation twoards the remainder of head season and the 2020 regatta season.

The event itself was very well run by Vesta Rowing Club and there was a great atmosphere amongst all those taking part.

A big thank you should also be extended to Furnivall Rowing Club who were superb hosts to the Sheffield scullers.
